Penstock Tunnel is a vital connection linking Wood Green town centre, the Cultural Quarter, and the new Alexandra Gate development in the east with Alexandra Palace, its parklands, and Hornsey in the west.
The improvement project will transform this route into a more accessible and welcoming space for walking and cycling. It will open up better access to green areas, enhance biodiversity, and introduce inviting public spaces designed for community activities, relaxation, and play.
Pedestrian and cyclist safety will be significantly improved through upgraded drainage and lighting, resurfaced pathways, and new flood mitigation measures—creating a safer, more enjoyable journey for everyone.
The tunnel was closed throughout July and August 2025 to enable works to take place. The tunnel reopened to pedestrians and cyclists on 1 September.
